Predoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral Fellows

Predoctoral Fellows. Two will be chosen each year. Applications will be solicited during the summer with the fellowship to start September 1. Students completing their second year of graduate school are eligible to apply. In order to be eligible, the student must be in good academic standing and be doing thesis work in an area related to infectious diseases/microbial pathogenesis/immune response to infectious agents. The advisory board will select the fellows based on a curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation. One of the letters of recommendation should be in the form of a "nomination" and would typically come from the thesis advisor. Support will be at the current Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences level.

Postdoctoral Fellows. Two to three will be chosen each year. One will be recruited from an application/interview process after national advertising, and the other two will be awarded to postdoctoral fellows already in a laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis.

Recruitment by national advertising: Each year applications from prospective postdoctoral fellows will be solicited by national advertising; the deadline may vary but will typically be mid-summer. The application will consist of a curriculum and three letters of recommendation. One of the letters of recommendation should be in the form of a "nomination" and would typically come from the predoctoral advisor. In addition, the applicant should indicate their choice of two to three Washington University laboratories that they are considering for postdoctoral work. These applications will be reviewed by the advisory board (see below). Three candidates will be chosen for three-day interview/visits in the fall with several labs of their choice. After the visit, the interviewing faculty will submit evaluations and the advisory board will rank the candidates. One fellowship will be offered; the candidate will have one month in order to decide or another offer will be made. Support level will be at the current NRSA level; currently this position will be funded by the Washington University infectious diseases training grant (thus the award currently is restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents). Individual faculty also may make offers to any candidate not selected, but the stipend cannot exceed fellowship level.

Recruitment of "in-house" postdoctoral fellows: Postdoctoral fellows who have had less than one year of postdoctoral experience may apply. The application deadline will be during the summer with the fellowship to begin September 1 of the same year. The application will consist of a curriculum and three letters of recommendation. One of the letters of recommendation should be in the form of a "nomination" and would typically come from the postdoctoral advisor. Selection will be by the advisory board. Support level will depend on funds available.

Infectious Diseases Fellows. One to two will be chosen each year from either the Department of Medicine or Department of Pediatrics infectious diseases fellowship programs. Applications are due during the summer after students’ first year, with the fellowship to start September 1 of the same year. The advisory board will select the fellows based on a curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation. Adult infectious diseases fellows will be supported from the infectious diseases training grant (unless already supported by an outside fellowship); pediatrics infectious diseases fellows will be supported from the pediatrics infectious diseases training grant, if available (unless already supported by an outside fellowship).
